Creative Uses for Shipping Containers

Shipping containers aren’t just used for shipping stuff. They have lots of creative uses outside of the transportation industry. The possibilities are endless, from homes and offices to restaurants and hotels. Let’s take a look at some of the many creative uses of shipping containers.

Hotels and Homes

Cargo containers have an alternate niche as base structures for hotels, which can operate as either transportable structures or permanently-established constructions. For those who want a little more permanency yet like minimalist living, such containers can also be converted into homes, many of which are solar powered for an eco-friendly approach.

Studios and Art Galleries

Shipping containers provide the perfect space for awe-inspiring studio workshops that reflect the uniqueness of the artist. Reprocessing cargo containers into art galleries and display centers can highlight and showcase anything from artwork to photography, with attractive lighting capabilities that can be optimized for the space.

Saunas and Pools

How would you like your own personal relaxation haven? A container-modified sauna could be the perfect place to relax, get a good steam, and sweat out all those toxins. Shipping containers also make great swimming pools due to their dimensions and sturdy construction. The best part is, these pools can be free-standing so you don’t have to break ground and deal with costly excavation.

Fitness Centers and Home Gyms

This is a cost efficient way to outfit your home with a gym or even provide fitness center services to the public. These well-equipped gymnasiums and fitness centers can be placed in schools, homes, and strip malls.

Temporary Shops

Shipping containers can be used as temporary structures for pop-up stores when specialty events are needed. They can also be transported, which means set-up and tear-down for short-lived events is minimized.

Laboratories

By their very nature, shipping containers are long and narrow, forming a natural hallway ideal for placing computer workstations. A row of desks with a computer placed at each can transform into an affordable and functional tech lab.

Workshops and Studio Spaces

Shipping containers are great for home craftsmen who want privacy and a dedicated space for storing tools and creating projects. Perfect for the DIY enthusiast or professional artist, containers as makeshift workshops and studios can provide small spaces for focused work on a budget.

Emergency Hospitals and Disaster Shelters

When health emergencies arise, it’s important for health care providers to have a mobile workstation as part of their emergency preparedness planning. They can be moved from site to site, going wherever is needed to tend to injuries arising from bombings, earthquakes, hurricanes and much more.

In the same vein, they can also be used as temporary disaster shelters when natural disasters strike, designed to aid those who have been suddenly displaced.

7 Questions You Should Ask Before Renting a Storage Container

Whether you want to rent a shipping container for additional storage, a construction project or a mobile office, it’s important to do your homework prior to settling on a provider. That involves asking a lot of questions. Once you have several rates to compare, as well as answers to all your queries, you can make the most informed decision possible.

Here are seven questions you should ask before renting a storage container.

#1: Do I need a permit for the container?

Before renting, you need to research any municipal rules concerning containers in your community. You could contact your city or county to determine if local ordinances against containers are in the books.

#2: What sizes and/or types of containers do you have?

This will vary by provider, but most offer a variety of containers in several different sizes and types. Here at Container King, we offer many different container sizes, such as:

  • 10 ft.
  • 20 ft.
  • 40 ft.
  • 45 ft.

Some are convenient for on-site storage solutions while others are ideal for mobile offices. The one you choose will depend on the intended usage, your budget and time frame.

#3: How much delivery space do you need?

A proper amount of open space is necessary for easy delivery of the container to your site. Container King shipping containers are delivered on a tilt bed truck. This requires that the area be flat and free of obstacles so the driver can maneuver the delivery trailer into place. You’ll have to check the entire access path to ensure at least 14 feet of clearance from the ground to overhead obstacles, like trees, utility lines and building overhangs. A loaded tilt bed truck will need 12-foot wide clearance.

#4: How long is the rental period?

Standard rental container industry periods are 28-day terms. Container King collects the delivery charge, first period’s rent and security deposit up-front.

#5: How long will it take to get my storage container?

Usually delivery takes place between one and three business days from receipt of order.

#6: How long does the actual delivery take?

We can’t speak for everybody, but here at Container King, it takes about 30 minutes or less to deliver your container. Because drivers often deliver multiple containers per day, if the delivery time exceeds an hour, the other deliveries will face a delay with possible rescheduling. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for your delivery. Otherwise, a time charge of $75/hour for each additional hour on-site may be imposed.

#7: What can I use the containers for?

This will depend on your intended usage, but overall, you can rent storage containers for:

  • Job site storage
  • Self-storage facilities
  • Construction storage
  • Mobile field office
  • Tool storage
  • Overflow equipment storage
  • Inventory storage
  • Workshops
  • School buildings and surplus supplies
  • Movable exhibition spaces
  • Agriculture storage
  • Break rooms and lunch rooms
